Download speed measures how quickly data can reach your device over WiFi. It affects activities such as streaming, browsing and downloading files. On a wireless connection, this number reflects both your Internet plan and how well your device’s WiFi signal is performing right now.

Your Internet connection is the link your Internet service provider (ISP) delivers to your router — it is what your monthly plan describes. WiFi is a separate, additional step: the wireless connection between your router and your device. A speed test always measures the whole path at once, which is why a WiFi test and a wired test on the exact same plan can return different numbers.

WiFi performance is shaped by more variables than a wired connection. These are the ones that matter most.

Distance from the router

The further your device is from the router, the weaker the signal and the lower the usable speed.

Walls and obstacles

  • Move closer to the router, or reduce the number of walls between you and it
  • Restart the router — it clears temporary congestion and memory issues
  • Reduce interference by moving the router away from other electronics
  • Use the WiFi band that suits your situation: 2.4 GHz for range, 5 GHz/6 GHz for speed at short range
  • Reduce unnecessary network traffic, such as large background downloads or backups

What is a good WiFi speed?

It depends on what you use the connection for and how many devices share it. A single device streaming HD video is comfortable well under 25 Mbps, while a household with several people streaming, gaming and on video calls at once benefits from a higher WiFi throughput and a router that can keep up. There is no single number that is “good” for everyone.

Why is my WiFi speed slower than my Internet plan?

Your Internet plan describes what your provider delivers to your router. WiFi is a separate, additional step: your router has to convert that connection into a wireless signal, which loses some capacity to distance, walls and interference. A gap between your plan and your WiFi result is normal; the question is how big that gap is.

How accurate is a WiFi speed test?

A browser-based test is a real, timed measurement of your device’s connection to our server at that moment, not an estimate. But it reflects everything in the path at that instant — your WiFi signal, your router, your device and our server — so results can shift between runs. Running it a few times gives a more reliable picture than a single result.

Does WiFi affect download speed?

Yes. Download speed is limited by whichever part of the path is slowest, and on a wireless connection that is often the WiFi link itself rather than your Internet plan. Distance from the router, the WiFi band and interference can all cap your download speed well below what your plan provides.

Why is my WiFi fast near the router but slow in another room?

WiFi signal weakens with distance and loses more strength passing through walls, floors and furniture. A room close to the router with a clear line of sight typically gets a strong signal, while a room further away or separated by several walls receives a weaker one, which lowers the speed your device can actually use.
