Speed & WiFi
An Internet speed test measures how quickly data travels between your device and a test server. Download speed is the rate at which data reaches you: it decides how fast pages load, whether a video stays sharp and how long a download takes. Upload speed is the other direction — sending files, backing up photos or sharing your camera on a video call. Both are measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Ping, or latency, is the time a small packet takes to make a round trip, measured in milliseconds (ms), and it matters most for gaming, calls and anything interactive.
Results change from one test to the next, and that is normal. Your speed depends on your plan, your router, the other devices online, the time of day and the distance to the server. A wired Ethernet connection usually gives the most stable figures, while WiFi weakens with distance, walls and interference from neighboring networks. Running an Internet Speed Test on a cable and a WiFi Speed Test from the room you actually use shows whether the bottleneck is your connection or your wireless signal.

A connection test gives you a handful of numbers. Here is what each one means, and which tool to use to look at it more closely.
Download speed is how fast data travels from the Internet to your device. It is the number you notice most: how quickly web pages open, whether a 4K stream stays sharp and how long a game update takes. It is measured in megabits per second (Mbps) and is usually the headline figure on your Internet plan.

An Internet speed test measures how your connection performs at a given moment: its download speed, its upload speed and its ping. It shows how much data your connection can move per second and how quickly it responds. You can check yours with our Internet Speed Test.
A speed test sends and receives data between your device and a test server for a few seconds. It measures how much data arrives per second (download), how much you can send per second (upload) and how long small packets take to make a round trip (ping), then reports the results in Mbps and milliseconds.
It depends on how you use your connection. Around 10 Mbps download comfortably handles HD streaming for one person, 25 Mbps or more covers 4K or several people streaming at once, and a home where several people stream, game and work at the same time is more comfortable with 100 Mbps or more. In the United States, the FCC’s broadband benchmark is 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload.
Lower is better. Under 20 ms is excellent, 20–50 ms is good for gaming and video calls, 50–100 ms is fine for browsing and streaming, and above 100 ms you may notice lag in real-time apps. Test your own ping to see where you stand.
Jitter is the variation in ping from one packet to the next. A steady 40 ms ping often feels smoother than one that jumps between 10 and 90 ms. High jitter causes choppy calls and unpredictable lag in games; below 30 ms is generally fine for real-time use. Measure it with our Jitter Test.
Packet loss is the share of data packets that never reach their destination. Around 1% is usually low enough to go unnoticed; above roughly 1–2% it starts to freeze video, cut words out of calls and cause lag spikes in games. On a healthy connection it should be at or very close to 0%. Check it with the Packet Loss Test.
WiFi travels through walls, floors and furniture and shares the air with neighboring networks, so speed drops as you move away from the router. The band you are on (2.4 GHz reaches further, 5 GHz and 6 GHz are faster at short range), the number of connected devices and your device’s own WiFi hardware all play a part.
Restart your modem and router, then compare a wired test with a WiFi Speed Test to see where the slowdown happens. Place the router in a central, open spot, pause large downloads and cloud backups, and keep the router firmware up to date. If wired results stay well below your plan, contact your provider.
