1. Move Your Router to a Better Location

Router placement affects every device on your network at once, which makes it one of the highest-leverage changes available. Aim for a central, open location rather than a corner of the house, and keep it out of closed cabinets or closets — enclosed spaces trap the signal instead of letting it spread.

Where possible, avoid placing it directly against thick or concrete walls, and keep it off the floor or tucked behind furniture; a shelf at roughly chest height in an open area usually works better than a spot on the ground. Most routers broadcast on more than one frequency band, and each one makes a different trade-off between range and speed. Picking the right one for your situation matters more than picking whichever is labeled “fastest.”

6 GHz is only available if both your router and your device support WiFi 6E or WiFi 7 — older hardware simply won’t see that band. This is related to router placement, but worth calling out on its own: what’s physically between your device and the router matters as much as the distance itself. Concrete, brick, and dense masonry absorb WiFi signal noticeably more than drywall or wood.

Metal — in appliances, mirrors, ductwork or structural framing — reflects and blocks WiFi rather than passing it through. Floors and ceilings between rooms add up the same way multiple walls do, and large furniture like bookcases or aquariums can create a surprisingly effective dead spot right behind them.

Within a band, WiFi is further split into channels, and a channel that’s heavily used by nearby networks behaves like a crowded road — everyone shares the same space and has to take turns.
