This measures response time over HTTPS, not a command-line ICMP ping, so it includes some browser and web-server overhead; results can also vary with your network, device and the current server load.

Gaming
In online gaming, ping is the delay between pressing a button and the game server registering it. A low ping means your actions land close to instantly; a high one means a small but real gap between your input and the result on screen. In competitive and FPS games that gap can decide a shot, a dodge or a round, which is why serious players chase a ping under 20–50 ms wherever they can. In slower-paced or turn-based multiplayer games a higher ping is far less punishing, since the timing rarely needs to be split-second.
Cloud gaming is the most demanding case of all: because the whole game runs on a remote server and only the video comes back to you, ping stacks directly on top of the console or PC's own input lag, so even a good ping is felt more than it would be in a locally rendered game.

Methodology
A browser can’t send a true, low-level ICMP ping the way a command line can — so this tool measures the closest thing it can access directly.
Your browser sends several small, timed requests to this server, one after another.
Each request's round-trip time is measured from the moment it is sent to the moment a response arrives.
The result is expressed in milliseconds (ms) — the smaller the number, the faster the response.
The first request is excluded as connection warm-up, and the reported ping is the median of the rest, so one unusually slow or fast request can’t skew the result.

Behind The Number
Ping is shaped by everything in the path between your device and the server. These are the factors that matter most.
Data still travels at a finite speed, so a server on the other side of the world will always reply slower than one nearby.
Heavy traffic on your network, or on the networks your data passes through, adds queuing delay along the way.
The path your data takes between hops isn’t always the shortest one, and extra hops mean extra delay.
A weak signal, interference or distance from the router all add latency on top of a wired connection.
Signal strength, network type (4G/5G) and how many people are sharing the same cell tower all affect mobile ping.
Routing your traffic through a VPN server adds an extra stop, which usually adds some latency.
Downloads, backups, streaming and updates running in the background compete for the same connection.
Your provider’s own network, its current load and its peering with other networks all play a part.
A distant or busy server takes longer to respond, regardless of how good your own connection is.

Terminology
In everyday use, ping and latency are often used interchangeably, and for most people that’s close enough. Strictly speaking, latency is the broader term for any one-way or round-trip delay in a network, while ping specifically refers to the round-trip measurement this tool takes: send a small packet, time how long it takes to come back. Ping is the time it takes for a small packet of data to travel from your device to a server and back again, measured in milliseconds (ms). It measures latency, not throughput — a connection can download quickly and still have a high ping. See our What Is Ping? guide for the full explanation.
As a general guide, under 20 ms is excellent, 20–50 ms is good and works well for gaming and video calls, and 50–100 ms is fine for browsing and streaming. Above 100 ms you may start to notice lag in real-time apps. The right number still depends on what you are doing and how far away the server is.

Usually, yes. A VPN routes your traffic through an extra server, which normally adds some latency. How much depends on the distance to that server and how busy it is; a well-located VPN server can occasionally lower ping to certain destinations instead.
